Barclays saves millions
Transaction costs reduced with optimization software
Barclays Global Investors (BGI) has saved hundreds of millions of dollars in transaction costs for its institutional investors by using ILOG CPLEX in three core portfolio management applications.

Part of Barclays Bank Plc., BGI is one of the world's largest investment managers, with over $770 billion distributed among 2,000 funds tracked by more than 250 indexes.

BGI has been using ILOG CPLEX in "trade crossing," matching thousands of assets in buy orders to similar assets in sell orders. BGI has also been using ILOG CPLEX in "portfolio in-kinding" and "fund rebalancing." Portfolio in-kinding transfers portfolio values directly into their targeted funds, while fund rebalancing creates optimal holdings of fund assets through appropriate trades.

Last year 600 BGI clients with over $185 billion in total portfolio value opted to transition their assets to hundreds of BGI-managed funds.

"Crossing is a major source of competitive advantage for BGI. However, the complexity and volume inherent in the crossing process required high-performance, sophisticated software like ILOG CPLEX."

PaSaTa matches
Web ads to viewers

Users control Internet experience
Japanese Internet users can now see only the ads likely to interest them, with PaSaTa Inc.'s Web viewer personalization system based on ILOG JRules and ILOG CPLEX.

Broadband enables streaming media to be piped directly into the home or office. To help Internet advertisers better target their commercials, PaSaTa has introduced a system that applies viewer profiles in selecting and inserting ads into Web video. The system also matches ads to video content and ensures the viewer is in the announcer's target group and shopping area.

PaSaTa is a subsidiary of Frontage, The Sony Group's advertising company. The new system uses ILOG JRules to select ad candidates according to their profiles, advertisers' preferences, and regulations governing advertising. ILOG CPLEX optimally selects and schedules ads, placing them in time slots in streaming Web video.

"ILOG JRules and ILOG CPLEX are the perfect fit to address the key technical challenges brought by streaming video ads for advertisers, broadcasters and content providers. We are being offered proven solutions for our media industry."

Deutsche Bahn refines scheduling
Rail planners get complete picture
DB Systems has created a cutting-edge scheduling interface with ILOG Views for PPSFR-Zug, a new highly advanced rail planning system.

DB Systems is a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, Germany's national railway. It is responsible for the IT support of most of Germany's rail system.
PPSFR-Zug is used to create and manage runtime schedules and configure trains. The planning system displays time and route diagrams with ILOG Gantt charts, and enables planners to refine schedules directly through the interface, accelerating the delivery of schedules. With ILOG Views, PPSFR-Zug will eventually enable planners to update or correct schedules throughout the year, readily accommodating changes and providing passengers with the most up-to-date timetables.

BPS boosts project efficiency
New interface developed in half the time
Business Propulsion Systems (BPS), the leading supplier of high-value business applications for the manufacturing and engineering sector, has cut the development time of the user interface for Project Activator by using ILOG JViews.

Project Activator renders large projects more efficient, using the BPS Convergence Process Model for planning and initiating activities. It also gives the status of each activity, reducing the need for meetings and report generation while providing a monitoring environment for catching problems early.

Crucial to Project Activator is its user interface. It relies on ILOG JViews Gantt charts to display project information such as resources and personnel, and the activities assigned to them. The company estimates the Gantt charts would have taken one and a half years to develop without ILOG JViews, but only took six and a half months with the Java visualization tool.

BPS has already sold Project Activator to leaders in the automotive industry.
