STC Gives 3 Quality Awards to ILOG Technical Writers
ILOGs excellence in software extends to its technical documentation,
as three of its manuals have recently shown by receiving awards
from the Society of Technical Communication (STC).
At a dinner ceremony held Sept. 24, the president of the French
STC chapter, Alison Bourdel, gave the members of the ILOG technical
communication team certificates commending their work. The STC is
an international organization for technical communicators, and currently
has more than 20,000 members worldwide, making it the largest association
serving the technical communication profession.
Annually, the European chapters of the STC select the best works
submitted by their members, judging the entries on content, structure
and design. Awards are given in four categories: Distinguished Technical
Communication, Excellence, Merit and Achievement. The awards ILOG
won were in the last three categories, placing the companys
manuals among the best in Europe.
The awards went to:
- ILOG Views Class Hierarchy, receiving an award for Excellence
- ILOG Dispatcher 2.1, for Merit
- ILOG TGO 1.1 Users Manual, for Achievement
The awards were given to the entire ILOG documentation team, for their ability to back
the leading software components with words that work. Developers have long found the best
source of information on ILOG components to be the supporting technical manuals, which are
well-written and structured in an easy-to-follow format.
The ILOG technical communicators extend the user-friendly nature of the companys
software to their documentation, making ILOG components fully fledged products.
Led by Virginie Ahrens, the team currently has 10 full-time professionals: Evyatar
Av-Ron, Kathleen Callaway, Janice Enger, Helene Kencker, Valerie Lecompte, Kevin Lohman,
Veronica Murphy, Isabelle Murru, Judith Schoof and Karen Sumpter. Most of them have been
in the industry for several years, constituting a vast pool of knowledge in their field.
The STC has a diverse membership that includes writers, editors, illustrators,
scientists and engineers who work in a wide range of fields, from computer and other
high-tech industries to medicine and advanced sciences. Among the other companies to
receive awards from the STC at the ceremony were IBM, Siemens and Business Objects.
ILOG Creates Divisions to Better Serve Customers
To better serve its new
and longtime customers, ILOG has refined its industry-based strategy by establishing
business divisions for the main sectors covered by the company.
In 1998, ILOG shifted
its sales and marketing orientation from products to industries, focusing on
telecommunications, manufacturing, transportation, and defense and aerospace. This
orientation proved so successful that this year the company has taken it a step further by
creating business divisions fully encompassing sales, services and product development for
each sector.
"By placing all the activities under one roof for each industry," explains
Pierre Haren, ILOG CEO and co-founder of the company, "were extending our
ability to respond more quickly to demand and further ensure all our customers needs
are fully met."
'Full-Service' divisions
Customers will benefit greatly from the new "full-service"
divisions. More than ever before ILOG will be able to provide the
right software and expertise.
Covering main industries
The business divisions continue the companys coverage of telecommunications,
manufacturing and transportation. Defense, aerospace and emerging markets (utilities,
banking, retail operations, etc.), however, are now in the same division with
transportation, and a division has been created for ILOG Direct, the companys
Internet and telephone sales service.
For the second year in a row, International Data Corp., the computer industrys
most comprehensive resource on IT markets, trends, products, vendors
and geographies, has described ILOG as being "the largest
software component provider" in the world. The companys
proprietary technologies are among the software industrys
most advanced and the direct result of customer collaboration. It
has strong ties with all the leading ISVs, and its customer base
and reach are worldwide, covering Asia, Europe and the Americas.
