Deutsche Bahn Manages Train Lines with ILOG JViews
To better manage its passenger train services, Deutsche
Bahn AG (DB) has had Transport, Informatik and Logistik Consulting
GmbH (TLC) develop a management system using a graphical user interface
(GUI) created with ILOG
JViews, the industrys most advanced 100% Pure Java
visualization component.
To remain the leading railroad company in Germany, DB constantly
has to upgrade its equipment and services. One of its current projects
involves giving its divisions greater control of their resources.
This effort has led to the adoption of the new monitoring and control
system, called ISTP.
45,000 Kilometers
DB manages more than 45,000 kilometers of railway, with about 30,000
itineraries a day. This requires ISTP to pinpoint the location of
every train at any moment, and report delays and ways to reduce
their effects.
To fully cover their lines, the DB services have 24 management
locations: seven for long-distance lines and 17 for local ones.
ISTP provides the transport managers of each service with a full
view of their lines through the ILOG JViews-driven GUI. The system
displays crucial information on the lines in real time, along with
geographical data concerning the state of the tracks and the areas
through which they pass.
Picking ILOG JViews
TLC decided to use ILOG JViews because of its shorter development
cycle, according to ISTP Project Manager Jürgen Beuttler and Dr.
Udo Hagemann, head of Java development at TLC. With its proven libraries
of graphical elements, the component enabled TLC to save both time
and money in making the system.
ISTP is kept on a server, and accessible through approximately
250 desktop computers running Windows NT.
ILOG JViews is ideal for creating management views of operations
and providing an interactive graphical environment. The component
comes complete with a variety of display formats, including spreadsheets
and Gantt charts, graphical animations, graphics editors and map
handlers. Able to run with all the leading operating systems, including
Windows NT, UNIX and Linux, ILOG JViews is the best choice for visualizing
operations in Java.
