ILOG Supports Web Thin Clients
New ILOG TGF backs web deployment of network management

As the Internet emerges as the ultimate server for managing far-flung resources, ILOG is continuing to back telecom with the best components for network and service management solutions. At the recent SUPERCOMM 2000, ILOG previewed ILOG TGF 2.0, the industry’s first software component able to develop graphical interfaces for web-based thin clients in network management.

ILOG TGF interface

The thin client links several computers for shared data storage and application usage. As telecom networks become more complex, the thin client is becoming the solution of choice for connecting a variety of computers spread out over a large area. The Gartner Group reported last year that thin clients can reduce staffing costs by as much as 80 percent and greatly accelerate application deployment, allowing software to be introduced or upgraded in hours, rather than weeks or months.

Ideal Environment
The pervasiveness of the Internet has made the web ideal for serving as the central network in thin clients. The end user can use a browser to tap a thin-client system to reach other computers through the Internet. The application service provider market supports the thin-client paradigm, and systems based on Java, HTML and C++ are becoming widely used.

ILOG TGF 2.0 includes all the building blocks for creating a graphical user interface (GUI) for managing a thin client. Complete with all the graphics and services to build a rich, interactive presentation layer, ILOG TGF can reduce development time by as much as 80 percent. Furthermore, with wireless access protocol (WAP) support, ILOG TGF 2.0 will make possible the use of palmtops or cell phones in accessing web-based thin clients.

ILOG TGF has already been adopted as the presentation layer for HP OpenView™ Service Assurance Products, which, according to Gartner, is the most widely used network management platform in the telecommunications industry.

Nokia Networks with ILOG
ILOG JTGO adds customization to management interface

Nokia Networks has selected ILOG JTGO and the ILOG JViews Component Suite for making graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for the company's line of network management systems.

The infrastructure arm of Finland-based Nokia, the system vendor will use the ILOG products to enable its customers to adapt Nokia's network monitoring system to specific deployments and integrate third-party systems.

"Nokia is committed to provide best-in-class solutions for web-based network management solutions, " says Jari Eskola, product line manager for Monitor Products, Operational Support Systems at Nokia Networks. "We selected ILOG components for their powerful mapping and geo spatial data handling. Nokia is committed to the provision of network management systems and operational support systems based on open systems and standards for the benefit of our customers."

Both ILOG components support such open standards as Java and CORBA. ILOG JTGO makes possible the rapid development of highly graphical and intuitive interfaces for network management applications. The component is supported by ILOG JViews, which provides sophisticated mapping capabilities and finely tuned display and graph layout algorithms.

"ILOG's Java GUIs meet the requirements of Nokia's NMS portfolio by enabling web-based, visually rich and customizable interfaces for network operators worldwide," says Manuel Montalban‚ vice president and general manager of the ILOG Telecom Business Division. "Nokia's selection of our products underscores ILOG's technological leadership and experience in the telecommunications industry as the leading provider of network management interfaces."

The ILOG components for creating network management GUIs - ILOG JTGO in Java and ILOG TGO and ILOG TGF in C++ -- are based on extensive research into operator usage and comfort. They reduce fatigue and improve operator response time with a variety of visual cues. Network operators using ILOG GUIs typically need less training and experience fewer problems resulting from human error. As a result, ILOG's visualization products are becoming the de facto standard for network and service management applications.

Telegnosis Cuts Routing Costs
ILOG CPLEX aids customers

Working with ILOG's highly trained consultants, Telegnosis has built a powerful optimization solution that greatly simplifies least cost routing (LCR) for telecommunications network operators.

Telegnosis equips network operators with systems for reducing routing costs through managing commercial relationships with other carriers. Its new solution, Telegnosis Globaliser, uses ILOG CPLEX to generate a complete LCR table for an entire global network, taking into account volume related pricing, network quality and traffic capacity.

"We wanted to create the ultimate least cost routing software component, which would give a telecommunications operator the ability to successfully and confidently manage an international network with ease," says Robin Booth, managing director of Telegnosis. "Only ILOG was able to provide the expertise in linear and mixed integer programming technologies required to achieve this truly remarkable goal."

Backed by ILOG CPLEX, Globaliser can solve a problem involving 722 call destinations, 47 interconnects, eight switches, 36,000 different carrier costs and 35,000 different qualities, in under two minutes on a 266MHz PC.

The components in Telegnosis' LCR portfolio have become renowned for their ability to reduce the time and cost of processing the vast amounts of constantly changing tariff data. Telegnosis stands as the network operator best choice for delivering the best decisions for handling network traffic.
