CEO addresses forum in China
The School of Management at Fudan University in Shanghai recently honored ILOG Chairman and CEO Pierre Haren as the distinguished guest speaker of this year’s Fudan-Standard Chartered Joint Forum.
In his speech, titled “How to Build an International Company,” Mr. Haren explained the founding of ILOG, the development of the company and its global expansion. Since its incorporation in 1987, ILOG has grown to include offices in every major market, including the Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe.
Building and running a successful international company is no small task. More than 50 people attended Mr. Haren’s presentation to gain insights into how it is done and the challenges that await them. Also in attendance were Bounthara Ing, ILOG’s deputy CEO and EVP Asia Pacific, and members of ILOG’s local subsidiary.
Academic program in China
Fudan University is one of China’s top universities. Its School of Management has more than 100 faculty members, three of whom have been listed in the “Outstanding Talents Program for the New Century” by China’s State Ministry of Education.
Fudan is a member of ILOG’s China Universities Alliance Program. Through the program, ILOG is working to establish its products in China through courses, research and hands-on projects. ILOG optimization is being taught this fall in the operations research module offered by the School of Management, and more courses on ILOG’s products are being planned.

EURO XXII
ILOG co-sponsors OR conference
ILOG took part in the 22nd European Conference on Operations Research (EURO XXII) in July at the University of Economics, Prague, Czech Republic. More than 2,000 people signed up for the two-day event, coming from all over Europe and as far away as the Americas and Asia to participate. ILOG was one of the main sponsors. It provided a half-day preconference workshop on the ILOG Optimization Decision Management System (ODMS) and used the event to further introduce the new ILOG CP Optimizer to the OR community.
ILOG also had a booth in the exhibition area, and participated in a semiplenary session on market trends in planning and scheduling applications.
During the closing session, Dr. Robert Bixby, ILOG’s chief science officer, gave a presentation, titled “From Planning to Operations.” He spoke on significant advancements in linear and mixed integer programming that have taken math optimization beyond just planning applications.
“The remarkable improvements in mixed integer programming software that started in the late 1990s have continued, unabated,” explains the abstract to Dr. Bixby’s speech. “These developments are enabling a new breed of applications for daily business operations and promise to make optimization a more central part of managing a modern enterprise.”
Other participants from ILOG included Greger Ottosson, senior manager for optimization products; Didier Vidal, marketing lead for ILOG CP Optimizer; and Hermann Stolle, senior technical account manager at ILOG Germany. About 70 people took part in the workshop, and about 100 attended the semiplenary presentation.
“I think it was a good conference overall,” says Mr. Ottosson. “It was an academic event, and the participants greatly appreciated the insights we offered into optimization, the mechanics of our software and the market in general. It’s possible that many of these people will base their careers on solutions built with ILOG software.”
