Chile optimizes school catering
Country saves $40 million with ILOG CPLEX
Chile has saved $40 million in meeting the challenge of feeding 1.3 million students a day through a network of caterers chosen with a bid-checking solution built by the University of Chile and based on ILOG CPLEX.
The National School Assistance and Scholarship Board (JUNAEB) of Chile is responsible for keeping the nation's school children fed. To better select meal services for more than 14,000 schools, the government agency asked the university to develop a system that could check the offers submitted by catering services and select those with the best bids and regional coverage, and the ability to meet JUNAEB guidelines for meal content and quality.
The university built the solution with ILOG CPLEX. The leading optimization component captures the entire bidding process -- more than 20,000 variables -- and finds the best candidates in less than two minutes.
According to JUNAEB, the application saved the Chilean government $40 million - 25 percent in expenditures - its first year in operation. This is equivalent to feeding 345,000 students over the course of a year. The system has also enabled JUNAEB to improve the nutritional content of the meals, the infrastructure for delivering the meals, and the working conditions for the food handlers at the schools.
"We were solving 700 problems, and each solution could not take more than two minutes."

EADS sharpens surveillance
Adds ILOG Views interface to tactical system
Modern coastal defense depends on highly sophisticated airborne surveillance systems like the Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS) from the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company CASA (EADS CASA: www.eads.com). To make FITS a more competitive choice for monitoring the waters off the coasts of the United States and other countries, EADS CASA - the Spanish arm of EADS -- has selected ILOG Views for a comprehensive graphical user interface (GUI).
FITS equips patrol aircraft with an array of sophisticated sensors for detecting and tracking both surface and submarine vessels. The system uses the data from the sensors to classify and identify vessels, and then displays the information with the ILOG Views-based GUI.
The complexity of the data and the rapid decisions operators must sometimes make, require a GUI that is highly accurate, intuitive and user friendly. ILOG Views delivers these crucial traits with mission-specific graphics and features.
FITS is currently being used by the Spanish Air Force's Orion fleet, and EADS CASA CN-235-300ER aircraft equipped with FITS are included in a winning Integrated Coast Guard Systems (ICGS) contract with the U.S. Coast Guard. Other countries that have selected FITS include Brazil, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates.
