Drawing the line
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. For telecommunications and cable network operators, Acterna’s Optical Fiber Mapping (OFM) solution finds the hidden “straight lines” they need to cut costs and improve network performance.

OFM determines the best fiber-optic route for connecting two points and making inner-duct connections. It can also pinpoint faults, outages, affected nodes and customer sites when searching for network problems, and generate customized reports for different departments within a company.

An ILOG partner, Acterna (www.acterna.com) based OFM’s graphical user interface on ILOG JTGO and ILOG JViews Maps. The two Java™ visualization components intuitively display optic network maps in a cockpit environment that lets operators directly interact with data on screen.

Acterna recently introduced OFM-500, which can route networks using constraints such as lowest attenuation, shortest length and minimum number of connections. The application saves a significant amount of work for both sales and provisioning staff by eliminating countless hours spent searching cables for spare fibers. OFM-500 also finds alternative routes for redirecting traffic when a line goes down.
