INFORMS Conference on OR/MS Practice
A whole new ballgame
Participants in this year’s INFORMS Conference on OR/MS Practice were introduced to a whole new approach to optimization from ILOG. At the start of the conference, ILOG held a workshop that covered the company’s latest optimization products. Among the items unveiled was ILOG Optimization Decision Manager (ODM). An entirely new type of product, ILOG ODM enables business users to directly interact with an optimization application to find the best resource planning and scheduling solution through what-if analysis and scenario management.
“One workshop attendee told me: ’I really liked it. This new vision completely changed the way I view ILOG,’ “ says Greger Ottosson, product manager for ILOG ODM. “This is what we want to hear. We’ve dramatically improved the accessibility of an essential business technology.”
ILOG ODM was one of four new ILOG Optimization Decision Management System (ODMS) releases showcased at the annual INFORMS conference, held April 17-19 in Palms Springs, Calif. The new ILOG OPL Development Studio 4.0, the latest version of ILOG CPLEX and ILOG Transport PowerOps (Story, Page 8) were also introduced. ILOG OPL Development Studio serves as the best system for modeling problems for ILOG CPLEX, the leading mathematical programming technology on the market today. The creators of ILOG CPLEX – Bob Bixby and Janet Lowe – have been honored with an INFORMS Impact Award.

Popular ILOG seminar series travels to Belgium
IT leaders praise BRMS
Satisfied ILOG customers Mario Denorme, applications leader at ING Belgium (www.ing.be), and Jean-Michel Detavernier, IT director at SMABTP (www.smabtp.fr), spoke at a recent ILOG seminar in Belgium, describing the competitive advantages of using ILOG JRules.
Messrs. Denorme and Detavernier easily stole the show with their presentations. Respected IT directors, they spoke to the attendees as knowledgeable users of ILOG JRules. Mr. Denorme’s testimonial focused on commissioning and financial services, and the critical roles they play in financial institutional sales. Commissioning business rules must be changed quickly and often, and run in applications that handle millions of transactions daily. ILOG JRules gives Mr. Denorme’s team the flexibility to quickly introduce new regulations and distribute them through a central repository.
Mr. Detavernier spoke on how SMABTP’s IT urbanization empowers business users to modify externalized business rules used across insurance applications. They can easily
modify or introduce rules to a running system through an easy-to-use rule editing interface.
Both of these business leaders helped give the seminar’s attendees a strong impression of the power and flexibility of ILOG’s BRMS technology. And many have elected to learn more from ILOG.
For over a decade, ILOG’s seminar series has introduced people throughout the world to ILOG’s advanced technologies. To learn more about the series, and where and how you can attend, visit: www.ilog.com/corporate/events.
W3C Workshop
Rule standards for the Web
ILOG recently hosted the World Wide Web Consortium’s first-ever workshop on rule languages -- an event regarded as the first step toward the creation of a standard business rule language framework endorsed by the W3C.
Held in Washington, D.C., and hosted by ILOG with the support of the DARPA Agent Markup Language Program, the workshop brought together industry, academic and government representatives from throughout the world to discuss how the rule framework will be developed to fit the Web’s architecture and address today’s business challenges. Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web and founder of the consortium, was among those who participated in the event.
Rules are a key element in the Semantic Web, an important development that will allow integration, derivation and transformation of data from multiple sources in a distributed, transparent and scalable manner. The workshop participants – software vendors, technologists, application developers, scientists, researchers and end users – submitted their recommendations for the representation and exchange of rules on the Web.
ILOG is a leader in the adoption and promotion of standards for business rule technology. It has participated in an effort to create a standard business rule language with the Object Management Group, and co-created Java Specification Request 94, a standard rule engine interface for the Java platform. ILOG has been a longtime supporter of the W3C, helping to establish the specifications for scalable vector graphics.
