ILOG JViews Powers DB Systems' New Train Dispatching System with Innovative
User Displays
Charts based on ILOG JViews Gantt Simplify Cargo Locomotives’ Scheduling
and Eliminate Need for Staff Training
BAD HOMBURG, Germany – May 11, 2005 – ILOG® (NASDAQ: ILOG;
Euronext: ILO, ISIN: FR0004042364), a leading provider of enterprise-class
software components and services, today announced that DB Systems, the IT services
provider of Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany’s national railway, has selected ILOG
JViews™ to create information-rich user displays for its new train
dispatching application. The system, called Cargo Disposition Fahrzeuge (CDIF),
is used to schedule cargo trains throughout Germany. Within CDIF, which was
designed from the ground up with dispatchers’ needs in mind, ILOG’s
graphics technology is expected to improve the speed and accuracy of decision-making
and has reduced staff training time to use the dispatching system to “almost
zero” from 5 to 8 days per user, according to DB Systems management.
The new CDIF user display uses the Gantt charts in JViews to monitor every
locomotive in the Railion network so that decisions can be made about scheduling
and deployment. Railion is the cargo subsidiary of DB.
Prior to the creation of the JViews-based CDIF system, dispatchers used a
system based on complex tables and numerical values to display scheduling information.
This low “user friendliness” kept initial training costs high.
Additionally, the cumbersome displays kept ongoing costs high as well since
many features remained hidden from view, preventing dispatchers from getting
the complete picture. Using the new JViews-based displays, Railion dispatchers
now have all scheduling information at-a-glance. Locomotive status can be flagged
with different colors with context-sensitive dialogue boxes indicating delays
or problems.
“
CDIF’s visual user interface is so intuitive and easy to learn that we
were able to reduce training hours to virtually zero since the application
has gone live,” said Rudolf Wagner, project manager at DB Systems. “Our
customer Railion has wholly embraced the application. We are now heading for
700 workstations with CDIF across Germany – 200 more than originally
planned. In the final roll-out stage, approximately 1,200 users will work with
CDIF in three shifts around the clock.”
ILOG JViews also shortened the time to market for the software developers
who built CDIF’s graphical user interface (GUI). “For the development
of CDIF, it was essential to have components that integrated well with our
core application,” explained Rudolf Wagner. “ILOG JViews ensured
just that and has helped us deliver CDIF in a fraction of the time compared
with building the display ourselves.”
Through its Java, .NET and C++ graphics libraries and components, ILOG provides
