Singapore's Nanyang Polytechnic, SCS and ILOG Collaborate for First Enterprise Business Rule Solutions Center
Center to Train More Than 2,100 Students In Newly Established BRMS Curriculum
SINGAPORE – July 19, 2006 - ILOG® (NASDAQ: ILOG; Euronext: ILO, ISIN: FR0004042364), Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and Singapore Computer Systems Ltd (SCS) today announced the establishment of the “Enterprise Business Rule Solutions Center” at the NYP School of Information Technology, resulting in the first credentialed curriculum for Business Rules Management System (BRMS) application development in the world. NYP is one of Singapore’s leading technical polytechnic schools.
The Center, which is located at the NYP campus, will train more than 2,100 NYP students over the next three years through BRMS courses added to the school’s curriculum. Students who complete the courses will graduate with the skills needed to develop and maintain BRMS applications, and will be able to gain work experience through more than 15 real-world industry projects. The students will also be given internship opportunities at ILOG, Singapore Computer Systems (SCS) and other solution providers where they can gain additional expertise in developing enterprise solutions using BRMS.
BRMS is gaining traction in the Asia Pacific region, driven by the same factors that have made the software category essential in the U.S. and Europe. For many industries, BRMS’s have become default solutions for addressing the challenges created by faster business cycles and change and aging software architectures that can not accommodate change quickly enough. This factor has made BRMS’s key components of IT modernization initiatives at Global 2000 companies and many government organizations worldwide. Because of their growing popularity, BRMS’s were identified by IT research firm IDC, in its report titled, “Worldwide Business Rules Management Systems 2005-2009 Forecast and 2004 Vendor Shares,” as a high growth market segment that is becoming a key component of the application infrastructure stack. The market is forecasted to reach $304.5 million by 2009, with a compound annual growth rate of 16.6 percent.
ILOG, a BRMS market leader, will provide the Center with its suite of BRMS software products and will train NYP lecturers on product usage through ILOG-certified training courses and internships at ILOG’s research and development centers in Gentilly, France and Mountain View, California. NYP will develop the BRMS curriculum as well as industry projects, and manage the Center.
A key function of the Center will be to create proof-of-concept projects that demonstrate the business value of BRMS technology. As more proof-of-concepts are completed, business rules from different industries will be stored in a centralized repository to help other companies jumpstart the creation of new applications, adding value to the Center and allowing students to gain valuable work experience.
The Center has already trained the first group of 20 NYP lecturers from the School of Information Technology on ILOG Rules for .NET™, a key offering in ILOG’s BRMS product line. In the training and with the help of SCS, three NYP lecturers developed a purchasing request management system application for a local bank in three months, which is less than half the time it would have taken had the system been hard-coded by programmers.
“We are glad to be one of the first few local organizations to explore the use of BRMS technology extensively. BRMS applications can deliver the flexibility and agility that enterprises need to stay competitive, and enhance the entire policy management infrastructure of the enterprise at the same time. This collaboration will greatly benefit our students, and their competency in BRMS will add value to their skill-sets as they join the workforce,” said Edward Ho, Deputy Principal/Technology, Nanyang Polytechnic.
“The establishment of the Enterprise Business Rule Solutions Center is a laudable move by ILOG, Nanyang Polytechnic and Singapore Computer Systems in supporting Singapore’s Intelligent Nation (iN2015) vision,” said Leong Keng Thai, Deputy Chief Executive and Director-General of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). “By equipping the students with training and the opportunity to work on real-life industry projects, the students are poised to acquire higher value-added expertise to be our next generation of techno-strategists.”
The NYP collaboration follows ILOG’s successful 2005 partnership with the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore to develop a “Business Rule Management System Center of Excellence” (BRMS CoE) in Singapore, which is helping more than 15 local companies develop BRMS pilot projects in key verticals such as financial services, healthcare, logistics and telecom.
