The Business Rule Solution for Your COBOL Applications

Many companies today deploy their mission critical applications—often written in COBOL—on the mainframe. When business rules are only hard-coded into the mainframe application, the process of updating the system requires specialized programming staff, risks the stability of the system, and can take a long time.

Externalizing and managing the business rules for these mainframe applications within a business rule management system (BRMS) makes maintenance more efficient for developers as well as non-technical business users. Organizations can incrementally move business rules within their COBOL application code to the BRMS, where they can be externally managed.

Rules for COBOL

How ILOG Rules for COBOL works
ILOG Rules for COBOL allows users to author rules that will be used to generate COBOL code. ILOG Rules for COBOL uses ILOG JRules Business Rule Management System (BRMS) capabilities as the base for auditing, versioning and meta data for all the rules that will be used as part of ILOG Rules for COBOL.

ILOG Rules for COBOL is the authoring and generation tool for COBOL applications. When you must make a change to your rules managed in ILOG JRules, all you have to do is quickly make the change in ILOG Rules for COBOL and then re-generate the COBOL code for execution on the mainframe.

ILOG Rules for COBOL allows organizations to scope their first set of rules based on a variety of factors, such as a business function within a mainframe application, a set of rules for a specific geographical region or territory, or by a specific type of customer, etc. All you need to start managing your rules from your COBOL code is a COBOL copybook to identify the input and output fields, along with the rules you need to manage.
  1. Import the COBOL copybook
  2. Map the COBOL copybook to the business object model (BOM) methods
  3. Author the business rules
  4. Generate the COBOL code

Key technical features
  • The ability to Import COBOL copylibs into Rule Studio to generate a BOM
  • Support for "actions" using translated virtual methods in the BOM
  • Full support for business action language (BAL) rules and decision tables
  • Customized editors and checkers to validate that constants in rules do not violate COBOL type constraints
  • Generation of COBOL source code for compiling and executing on the mainframe.
