ILOG Elixir: Advanced Data Visualization for Adobe FLEX and AIR
FAQ

This page lists some of the more general questions (and their answers) about IBM IBM ILOG Elixir. Answers to technical questions can be found in the technical FAQ in the IBM IBM ILOG Elixir Forum.

 Licensing
  • I understand there are two different IBM IBM ILOG Elixir licenses: standard end-user licenses and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) licenses. Please explain the difference between the two licensing models and pricing options.
End-user licenses are used by default, unless your IBM IBM ILOG Elixir-based applications (or hosted services) are off-the-shelf offers that generate license or use revenue (when deployed in a software as a service model (SaaS), for instance). This means you must purchase an OEM license only if you sell off-the-shelf products or services for which customers pay fees. Custom developments do not fall under the OEM license (see below).

There is only one exception: If you fall under the end-user license as described above because your applications or hosted services will be available for free, but they are extensions of off-the-shelf commercial products or services (for example, if you offer a free add-on to a product you sell that uses IBM IBM ILOG Elixir), you must use an OEM license.

  • I am creating a free public website with IBM IBM ILOG Elixir. What kind of license do I require?
You can use an end-user license because you do not generate license or use revenue with your application or service.
  • My company is typically considered an independent software vendor (ISV) or original equipment manufacturer (OEM), but I want to use IBM IBM ILOG Elixir for an intranet application. What license do I require?
You can use an end-user license because you do not plan to generate license or use revenue with your application or service.
  • My company wants to distribute IBM IBM ILOG Elixir components in a Web application. We will not sell this Web application. Do we require the commercial license or the standard end-user license?
You can use an end-user license because you do not plan to generate license or use revenue with your application or service—unless you fall under the exception to the rule described in the first question in this FAQ
  • I am a consultant, and I am developing an IBM IBM ILOG Elixir-based application for another company. What license do I have to buy? What license do my customers have to buy?
You can purchase an end-user license, because you are selling software development and maintenance fees, rather than licenses or use fees of off-the-shelf software or service. If your customers' applications or services fall under the OEM license as described above, they will have to purchase an OEM license.
  • I am an independent consultant, and I am developing an IBM IBM ILOG Elixir-based application that I plan to host on my own website. Am I required to purchase an OEM license?
If you offer the application for free, then no. If you charge others for use, then yes. In this case, you are creating an off-the-shelf application, and you are selling software, so you must purchase an OEM license.
  • I am an ISV or OEM and I plan to extend my existing software application capabilities with some additional free modules that include IBM IBM ILOG Elixir. Will I be charged to do this?
Even if your application's modules are delivered free, you are required to use an OEM license because IBM IBM ILOG Elixir is meant to develop an extension of an application that is sold to third parties (This is an exception to the rule mentioned in the first answer, above).
  • Are IBM IBM ILOG Elixir development licenses associated with a developer or with a computer?
IBM IBM ILOG Elixir development licenses are sold to individual developers. You may use IBM IBM ILOG Elixir on every machine you use for development, including test machines.

You may not allow another developer to use this license to develop an application with IBM IBM ILOG Elixir. Each developer who uses IBM IBM ILOG Elixir to develop an application must have a valid development license.

  • Will I get free upgrades?
Both patches and minor releases are provided free to the entire IBM IBM ILOG Elixir community; however, major releases require an upgrade fee.
  • How much does it cost to upgrade from IBM IBM ILOG Elixir 1.0 to IBM IBM ILOG Elixir 2.0?
If you are already using Elixir 1.0, you can upgrade your development license for $499.00. You can purchase a license upgrade at Adobe online.
  • How much does it cost to upgrade from IBM IBM ILOG Elixir 2.0 to IBM IBM ILOG Elixir 2.5?
The upgrade is free. Please contact the company you purchased your development seat from (Adobe, one of its resellers or IBM ILOG) with your IBM IBM ILOG Elixir 2.0 serial, your proof of purchase and platform needed (Windows, Max or Linux) and you will get the 2.5 installers.
  • Is IBM IBM IBM ILOG Elixir 2.5 using new serial numbers?
No, it is a minor release, available for free.
  • How much is an OEM license, and how is it charged?
The OEM license fee is fixed, and it is charged annually. Read more about the fee structure for ISVs and OEMs.
  • I plan to use IBM IBM ILOG Elixir as an ISV or OEM. I need to make a make-or-buy decision, and need multiple years of visibility for IBM IBM ILOG Elixir pricing. What are my options?
You have several options. Please contact us for details.
  • I plan to extend IBM IBM ILOG Elixir, in order to provide more advanced or specific components (rather than applications or services). Is this possible?
Yes, as long as your applications or services fall under end-user license requirements; and as long as your resulting component does not compete with any IBM IBM ILOG Elixir components.
  • I understand the IBM IBM ILOG Elixir OEM license term expires after one year. What happens if I do not renew my license?
If you do not renew your OEM license, you are allowed to distribute your applications and their updates to your existing customers only. You must renew your OEM license in order to sell your application to new customers.

IBM ILOG Elixir patches and minor releases will be available for free.

Certain customers may consider funding the implementation of a set of wishes for prioritized implementation. Contact us for details.

    • Does IBM ILOG Elixir come with source code? If so, are there limitations on my use of that source code?
Paying IBM ILOG Elixir customers will receive access to the source code. The code can be used only for debugging purposes and to help you understand how the code works. You cannot distribute it to third parties.
