Options for Customizing Rule Authoring

The words you see in a business rule are a mix of vocabulary elements and business rule language constructs.

Vocabulary elements come from user-defined BOM entries and the System BOM provided by default in a rule project. The System BOM also has a vocabulary layer that you can see in the System entry of the Rule Studio Vocabulary view.

You can customize business rule authoring at different levels:

Add custom types for values in the BOM and handle the way they are displayed, edited, and processed in rule editors; see Managing BOM Value Types.
Define your own business rule language; see Defining a Custom Business Rule Language. There are several levels of business rule language customization:

Modify BAL to change the order or wording of BAL constructs.
Extend BAL to introduce new types of business rule language constructs.
Use existing business rule language constructs from BAL or the basic components of the Business Rule Language Definition Framework (BRLDF) to create a completely new language.

Localize new and existing business rules by translating the business rule language and vocabulary files; see Localizing JRules.

In all cases, after customizing business rule authoring, you need to integrate your extensions to Rule Studio and Rule Team Server.
