Setting Project Security

Project security means restricting user access to a given project. When security is not enforced on a project, any user of Rule Team Server can create/update/view/delete any of the elements of that project.

When you enforce security on a project, you specify which groups (see Groups) can access the project. Then, users not belonging to at least one of the groups specified will not have that project available to them in their drop-down list of projects.

When a user signs in, Rule Team Server evaluates what the user can do, based on the following criteria for the group or groups to which the user belongs:

To which of the three basic groups (rtsUser, rtsConfigManager, rtsAdministrator) does the user belong. This determines which tabs of Rule Team Server are available. For example, users of the rtsAdministrator group also have the Configure and Admin tabs available when signing in, as well as more buttons in some of the toolbars (Manage Baselines, Release Locks, and so on).
What permissions have been set for that group to create/update/view/delete specific types of project elements (smart views, folders, rules, ...) and their properties (status, name, definition, ...), as described in section Permissions.

Note

Access to a project for a given group is established only for that project, and not for all Rule Team Server projects.

To set project security:

In the Admin tab, click Edit Project Security.
In the Edit Project Security page, check Enforce security for this project:

Select the groups you want to give project access to from the Available groups window and move them to the Selected groups window using the arrows located between the two windows.

Note

The rtsAdministrator group should not be available since the Administrator has all rights on the project regardless.

Use the arrows located to the right of the Selected groups window to establish the priority with which the Group property (see What are Properties) is set if a user who creates a new project element belongs to more than one of the allowed project groups.

Click Save in the toolbar to save the changes.

Once project security is implemented, you must specify, for each group (see Groups) that can access the project, what permissions they have with respect to creating, updating, viewing, and/or deleting which types of project elements, as explained in section Permissions.
