This chapter introduces the JViews Maps and JViews Maps for Defense Data Disk on which you can find different types of data suitable for use with JViews applications. The Data Disk contains both raster, vector and elevation data collected from various free sources. The Data Disk aims to making your evaluation and prototyping easier. If you need additional maps for your application, some sources are listed in the last chapter of this document and you can also use Web Map Servers (WMS) from within the MapBuilder.
Raster files often come from satellite views and are grids of pixels, and can be used as map backgrounds. Vector files result from human interpretation and consist of sets of lines, points, or areas. They are often used to display road networks for instance and can include non graphical data such as road names or population sizes. Elevation files are map datasets that provide altitude information for given places on the earth. If you need additional maps for your application, some sources are listed in the last section of this section.
